Troubleshooting
Optical cable connected but no TV sound
An optical connection needs the TV output, the receiving input and the audio format to agree. Keep the TV and soundbar model names handy because optical output options differ between products.
Work through these checks
Follow OUT to IN
Check that the cable runs from the TV’s optical audio output to the speaker or receiver’s optical input. Remove any shipping caps. Align the connector gently and check that it is fully seated at both ends.
Select the optical input
Choose Optical or the input assigned to that socket on the audio system. Check your TV manual for its digital audio output setting. Some models require the optical output to be enabled separately.
Try Stereo/PCM
Write down the TV’s current digital audio setting and test PCM. If sound returns, the previous format may not be supported along this connection. Check the audio system’s supported formats before choosing surround sound again.
Compare the source and cable
Test a TV app, then your HDMI player. Optical forwarding of an external source varies by TV. If every source is silent, test another optical cable if available and record the results for the manufacturer.
What did you find?
- PCM produces sound
- Investigate format compatibility before changing hardware.
- Only the HDMI player is silent
- Check whether your TV forwards that source and format through optical.
